At a glance
Write a portrait prompt that names the subject, expression, framing, setting and lighting. Add a visual style, choose a suitable aspect ratio and inspect the result. Reference editing can guide continuity but does not guarantee an identical face.
Describe the person and the mood
Name visible features, expression, clothing and activity without relying only on attractive or professional. A calm artist in a ceramics studio and a formal headshot against a plain background need different scene descriptions. Use fictional subjects for concept exploration.
Make lighting specific
Soft window light, a single side light and overcast outdoor light create different shadows and textures. Choose one clear lighting direction when testing a portrait. Change that direction before rewriting the whole prompt so that you can see its effect.
Choose framing and inspect the details
Use close-up, head-and-shoulders or waist-up framing and select a matching image ratio. Inspect eyes, ears, hands, clothing and background objects at the downloaded size. Keep the original when trying another variation.
Continue carefully from a reference
To guide another image from an existing portrait, attach it with a supported GPT Image model and describe what should stay the same. Only use portraits you have permission to edit. Reference input is guidance rather than a promise of identity-perfect or professional headshot retouching.
A prompt to start with
Portrait of an adult ceramic artist in a quiet studio, waist-up view, relaxed expression, linen shirt, soft window light, realistic skin texture, neutral background, editorial photography, no text.
